Lynnell Calkins

Lynnell Calkins started skiing in 1978 with her club and within a few years became very active in club activities. Holding several offices at the club level, which included Secretary, Membership, Activities, and Assistant Race Director. Beginning in 1984, she started getting involved with Rokka League. At the League level, she served as Assistant to the President. Without her “behind the scenes” activities, the league would not have had the success it had during her tenure.

In 1982 she became one of the founding members of the Far West Racing Association. She served as FWRA Secretary for 20 years. Serving as Administrative Assistant to the President, her functions were vital to the success of the operations of FWRA.

For her involvement and work with the racing program, at all levels, in 1998 she received the Terry Smith Award.

Along with club, league, and FWRA, Lynnell was also active with L.A. Council. She began her L.A. Council involvement, as Club Rep. It didn’t take long before she became drawn in to L.A. Councils activities. From 1984 until 1992 she served as Personnel Director for L.A. Ski Swap, from which proceeds helped the clubs, race leagues, as well as L.A. Council.

Some of her biggest contributions are not only from the offices she has held, but the many hours of “behind the scenes” assistance. Her unselfish assistance has been prevalent at L.A. Council, FWRA, and FWSA. For her “if you need it done, I’ll do it” effort, in 2000 she was a recipient of the Elizabeth “Schatzi” Wood Award.

She has been on staff for FWSA Ski Week since 1996 joining the travel staff. She was responsible for skier registration and assisted with the races. In 2004, she elected V.P. of North American travel. As VP, she ran 4 very successful Ski Weeks. She has served 16 years with FWSA programs helping improve the relationship between FWSA and the ski industry.

When something is needed, she can be called upon. This skier/racer has sacrificed many “on the hill” ski days to ensure that events come off, on time and with minimal problems, if any. Even though a lot of her ski time is spent on non-skiing activities, she still finds enough time to get in some skiing and even an occasional race.

For over 30 years of service, at many levels, it is appropriate to honor Lynnell Calkins as the 2009 Hans Georg recipient.
