Rich Marriott

Rich Marriott is co-founder of the Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center in Seattle, Washington. He is also the meteorologist for KING 5 Morning News, KING 5 Morning News on KONG, and KING 5 News at Noon. He joined KING 5 in 1987 as a meteorologist for KING 5 Weekend News and moved to his current position in 1990.

Prior to joining KING-TV, Marriott was a meteorologist for the U.S. Forest Service Northwest Mountain Weather and Avalanche Forecast Center. He provided detailed mountain weather and avalanche forecasts for Washington and Oregon to government and private agencies, as well as the public. Marriott also worked for the University of Washington during the summers as station manager for the Blue Glacier Research Project in the Olympic Mountains. He maintained a research facility at the 6800-foot level on Mt. Olympus and carried out research in glaciology, climatology, and meteorology. This position also occasionally involved helping with search and rescue and educational programs for Olympic National Park. He has also conducted research on the meteorology of the upper atmosphere. Marriott continues to work as a consultant in mountain meteorology, software design for weather instruments and data collection, and avalanche planning and education.

Marriott belongs to the American Geophysical Union, the National Physics Honorary, the American Avalanche Association, and the American Meteorological Society (AMS). Marriott is also Secretary of the Steering Committee for the International Snow Science Workshop, one of the leading conferences on Snow and Avalanche Technology and Mountain Weather. He has published numerous research papers in scientific journals, including Nature, Journal of Glaciology, Journal of Geoelecticity and Geomagnetism. He has served as Executive Secretary for the International Snow Science Workshop (ISSW). He is an active participant in the American Lung Association’s Climb for Clean Air, during which he climbed Mt. Rainier and did live broadcasts with the group in 2002. Marriott received his bachelor of science in physics and master of science in meteorology from UCLA.

Rich belongs to Sno Jokes Ski Club in Washington and enjoys the outdoors where his activities include snowboarding, downhill skiing, telemark skiing, hiking and backpacking. He also enjoys reading (especially in remote places), amateur astronomy, working on computers, gardening, and watching his children grow up. He volunteers his time in the community as a speaker, auctioneer, tour guide, and emcee.
